Ultrasonic Transformer Oil Level Management

Portable, Non-Invasive Liquid Level Detection for Industrial Tanks

Ultrasonic Transformer Oil Level Management

Reliable transformer performance is essential to the stability of Canada’s power grid. Regular maintenance helps utilities, municipalities, and industrial operators ensure safe operation, reduce downtime, and avoid costly failures.

Transformers play a critical role in power transmission and distribution. While they are built for long service life, proactive maintenance is key to protecting these high-value assets. Routine inspections help prevent overheating, preserve insulation systems, and extend overall transformer life expectancy.

Effective cooling is one of the most important factors in transformer reliability. Elevated operating temperatures can significantly reduce insulation life. Preventing hotspots and maintaining proper oil condition are essential to long-term performance.

Transformer Maintenance and Oil Level Management Solutions

Oil-filled transformers rely on high-quality mineral oil for both insulation and cooling.

Maintaining correct oil levels is vital to avoid overheating, insulation breakdown, and potential fire risks. Regular inspection for leaks, corrosion, and seal integrity is part of best practice maintenance programs.

Transformer oil levels can fluctuate due to temperature changes, load variations, and normal operating conditions. In addition, removing oil during routine sampling and laboratory analysis can withdraw up to approximately 2 litres per sample. Over several years, repeated sampling may gradually reduce the total oil volume in a transformer if not properly managed. Accurate monitoring and timely top-ups help ensures units remain within safe operating ranges and helps prevent over-pressurization or thermal stress.

The oil level device uses ultrasound in order to detect the presence of a liquid. In order to do this, the main unit sends a strong electrical signal to the sensor, which then emits a high energy pulse of ultrasound into the transformer wall. The ultrasound is conducted through the solid walls of the transformer and then interacts with the contents. After the sensor stops, emitting ultrasound, it starts listening for the returning echos of the signal. If no liquid is present, the echos will not be returned. This process allows the device to detect the presence or absence of transformer oil where the sensor is placed.

How PortaTank Works

PortaTank uses ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement:

  • 1
Apply ultrasonic gel to the tank wall.
  • 2
Move the sensor down the tank.
  • 3
The red LED indicator turns on when liquid is detected.

The ultrasonic signal travels through the tank wall, reflects off the liquid surface, and returns to the sensor—providing clear confirmation of LIQUID / NO LIQUID.

Advanced Troubleshooting with Built-In Oscilloscope

PortaTank includes a handheld oscilloscope to:

  • 1
    Visualize
    ultrasonic signals inside the tank
  • 2
    Optimize
    parameters for maximum accuracy
  • 3
    Diagnose
reasons for unsuccessful or inconsistent readings

This ensures top performance in any tank environment.
